ASKOS Olive Oil from Kos - Origin, Varieties & Quality

ASKOS Olive Oil from Kos – direct from the island

ASKOS olive oil comes directly from the Greek island of Kos. The olive oils are produced by the Papadimitriou family business, which has a long tradition of olive oil production on Kos. Koroneiki olives – one of the most famous Greek olive varieties – are used for ASKOS Black and White.

At Roubier Premiumhandel, you can buy ASKOS olive oil in Germany – from the intensely spicy ASKOS Black to the particularly mild ASKOS White. On this page, you can learn more about the origin of Kos, the differences between the varieties, and the taste and quality of ASKOS olive oils.

What makes olive oil from Greece special?

Greece is one of the most traditional olive oil regions in the world. The climate, many hours of sunshine, and the different olive varieties shape the taste and aroma of the oils. Depending on the variety and harvest time, Greek olive oils can taste mild and balanced, or strong, fruity, and slightly peppery.

On Kos, olives and olive oil are traditionally used in many ways – for refining salads and vegetables, with bread and feta, and for numerous Mediterranean dishes.

What does "Extra Virgin Olive Oil" mean?

Extra virgin olive oil is the highest quality class for olive oil. It is obtained exclusively by mechanical processes and must not exceed certain quality limits. An important characteristic is the low content of free fatty acids: for extra virgin olive oil, it must not exceed 0.8 percent.

In addition to these measurable quality characteristics, taste also plays an important role. High-quality extra virgin olive oil can have fruity, grassy, mild, bitter, or slightly peppery notes, depending on the olive variety.

Mild or intense – which olive oil suits me?

Not every olive oil tastes the same. While some prefer a mild, balanced oil, others like a stronger and more characteristic taste.

ASKOS White is the milder variant and is particularly suitable for those looking for a harmonious olive oil for daily cooking.

ASKOS Black is more intense in taste and the right choice for those who like their olive oil stronger and more expressive.

Both olive oils come from Kos and are classified as extra virgin olive oil. Current laboratory analyses show a free fatty acid content of 0.47% for ASKOS White and 0.28% for ASKOS Black – both below the limit of 0.8% stated in the certificate.

Olive oil from Kos – the Papadimitriou family

Behind ASKOS is the Papadimitriou family on the Greek island of Kos. Konstantinos Papadimitriou and his sons Giannis and Vangelis run the Kos Olive oil mill in its third generation.

With a production of around 2,000 to 3,000 liters of olive oil per year, the business is not part of industrial mass production. Small local olive farmers and producers from nearby islands also bring their olives to the oil mill for processing.

During the harvest season, olives are collected on Kos and processed into olive oil. The olive harvest typically begins there in autumn; the main season is in October and November.

The oil mill is also accessible to visitors to the island: there you can learn more about the production and get to know different olive oils and specialties.

Which ASKOS olive oil suits you?

If you prefer a mild and balanced taste, ASKOS White is a good choice. It can be used in many ways in daily cooking – for example, for salads, vegetables, dips, and Mediterranean dishes.

If you like olive oil stronger and more characteristic, ASKOS Black is the more intense alternative. It is particularly suitable where the taste of the olive oil is intended to consciously stand out.

Laboratory-tested quality

With olive oil, it's not just the taste that matters. Various chemical analysis values also provide information about the oil examined. Therefore, ASKOS White and ASKOS Black were analyzed in the laboratory.

For ASKOS White, a free fatty acid content of 0.47% was measured. The analysis also shows a peroxide value of 7.9 meq O₂/kg, K268 of 0.151, K232 of 2.390, and ΔK of -0.002.

For ASKOS Black, the measured free fatty acid content is 0.28%. The analysis also shows K268 at 0.145, K232 at 1.559, and ΔK at -0.007.

Both laboratory certificates list the examined oil as "Extra Virgin Olive Oil" or "Εξαιρετικό Παρθένο Ελαιόλαλο".
